Children are molded towards a certain direction in the early years of their childhood, where their cognitive, physical and social development starts to develop and take root. Certain issues stem up during these periods that hinder their development and restrict their growth and progress. There could be issues related to sensory processing, lack of fine and gross motor skills which could lead to loss of morale and self-confidence as they grow up, which is where Occupational Therapy comes into play.

Daily living tasks such as locomotion, stability or balance are normal to every growing child, but to those who have certain conditions, this is not the case, and the child gets highly aggravated and emotionally imbalanced as he/she is unable to perform the most basic tasks. Occupational Therapy bridges this gap, as children learn through regular training, on how to utilize their basic faculties to carry out their daily tasks. A thorough analysis of the child is undertaken in order to understand the condition, so that the Therapy provides the maximum benefit for the child.

Advantages of Occupational Therapy

  1. Enhances gross and fine motor skills.
  2. Independence in daily living activities.
  3. Enhances core and posture strength.
  4. Improves overall strength and stability.
  5. Enhances visual motor/ perceptual skills.

Children at a young age are equipped to learn new skills, and even with cases such as Autism or Down Syndrome, Occupational Therapy has demonstrated that through regular training, effective changes are possible.

Sensory integration activities, coordination activities, visual-perception activities, fine and gross motor skill activities that requires the participation of certain parts of the body or the full-body, are utilized to train up the child, so that through these multiple activities, certain muscles and joints can be engaged and through regular training, these muscles, joints and tendons start to strengthen, thus bringing the necessary results for the welfare and well-being of the child.

Inclusion is the key word of today but inclusion must be done in the right way! Taking a child with learning disabilities and placing him/her in an institute where the educational approach only puts them out of place is a waste of time and takes a toll on the mental health of the child, don’t you think?

It isn’t the fault of the educator for not recognizing that a child has a learning disability, for he/she is not a psychologist/therapist, but yes, by keeping a close watch on each child which is extremely difficult for any teacher, they will be able to help or assist them in whatever form or way they can.

Every child has the right to a complete education, whether they may have disabilities or not. This is where special education comes in to play, where children after diagnosis for any disabilities can be taught in a manner and approach that they require rather than what is generally followed. No matter what disabilities children have difficulties with, as special educators we are able to re-train and model them into a process of study that they are able to understand, so when society puts them down for their disabilities, as a parent, think once, if the dark voices of society is what you want to listen to, or do you want to support your child break out of the condition he/she has been placed into by no fault of their own?

The many advantages of Special Education:

  • Helps children focus on their challenges to find solutions.
  • Builds confidence and shifts negative-behavior patterns.
  • Re-building positive self-talk through encouragement and reinforcement.
  • Assist parents in understanding their child’s disability and support them in participating in the education of their child.
  • Assists in creating the right educational program for the child.
  • Builds communication and social competence through interaction with peers.

As teachers and educators, we must apply what we have studied to genuinely assist children to learn and grow. Many of the issues of this world can be healed and changed because good thoughts and good habits start in the classroom, which is why Teachers are always of high value and someone children look upto.

We all need an intervention once in a while, parent or educator, so that we are able to improve upon our own selves which gives us more understanding on how to lead todays’ children in the right direction and it is up to each one of us to consistently work towards their future and the first step to that, is by being a good role-model for them.

Changes around you can only begin with you!

Empower Express

At JIMPIRE, we believe that learning difficulties of the child must be understood at a young age, because it is at this age that they are ready to be molded in the right direction towards self-development, empowerment and success.

Empower Express is an assessment camp aimed to identify children with learning, cognitive and developmental difficulties and provide them with special training to nurture them towards achieving their full potential. The camp was conducted in educational institutions in and around Changanacherry, to not only assess but also to educate the parents and teachers on how to bring improvement, and a positive transformation into the lives of the children, that is directly beneficial towards the betterment of their communities and society.

Empower Express is promoted by JIMPIRE, a premier child development facility situated in Changanacherry, Kerala. The event was inaugurated by the Director of JIMPIRE, Fr. Sebastian Punasserry, organized and run by its CEO, Mr.Cifin Paul Joseph.

Program Highlights:

Individual evaluations are conducted based on the child’s ability to focus and sustain attention, on reading, writing, comprehension, on basic arithmetic and problem-solving skills including pattern recognition, logical thinking and memory-based assessments.

The assessment is conducted for class I to class IV students (CBSE, ICSE and State syllabus). Separate modules, worksheets, manuals, and activities are used for the assessment of each class.

The camp is conducted by pediatric professionals such as psychologists behavioral, speech and occupational therapists, special educators, social workers, physiotherapists. Along with the learning test, a general screening of speech issues such as stammering, clarity issues and also behavioral issues are being noted for further assessment.

Results:

At the end of the camp, the teachers and schools received a class-wise report evaluating each child’s learning, cognitive and developmental strengths and weaknesses. Specialized guidance is provided for the teachers and parents on the steps forward to recognize areas for growth, improvement and the overall betterment of the child.

Through Empower Express, various learning issues and difficulties of the child can be recognized, and the right guidance provided. As a teacher or parent reading this, recognize the importance of such camps, and ensure effective measures are implemented to contact JIMPIRE at the earliest to book a camp in your institution.

The struggles of daily living are real. Many of us have watched our parents work to the bone to provide and in this modern-age where everything is readily-available, we must not allow ourselves to become comfortable when it comes to our children. We must do our duty towards raising children up in the right direction.

When it comes to parents of children with autism, things get slightly more complicated which is why it is necessary to build proper communication between the child and the parent that is based on respect for one another. Yes, the parents have to work to provide for themselves and the family but time must be spared for the child because they are looking for it from you and when they don’t get it, they start to shut down, which leads to distancing between child and parent.

The world out there is getting complicated as the years pass which is why family values must be passed down to the child as there are now innumerable child development centers available to support and assist in the child’s growth, but unless you make the first step, your own child will not get the support they deserve.

As a parent what can you do is:

  • Make time for family-activities.
  • Be a good role-model for the child.
  • Get organized and find a training facility with the time and resources to support the child.
  • Spend quality time with the child as a family.

3 strategies for effective communication between parent and child:

  • Make the time to talk to your child for atleast 15 mins everyday about their activities.
  • Teach them right behaviors not by simply telling them about it, but by being an example for the type of behavior they should emulate.

If you don’t make time for your child, the child will fall into depression, and loneliness, and as they grow up, will grow to resent themselves and the world around them, so ensure you spare time out of your day, no matter your lifestyle, to spend quality time with your children.

👪What your child will learn here at JIMPIRE, is how to handle themselves out in the world, where the parent shall also learn how to be more effective in your approach towards their development thus building your family-unit a future!
